Tips for Getting Organized in the New Year

The New Year is the perfect opportunity for making resolutions, renewing your goals, and reorganizing your home. I like to start off each January with a deep clean and organization to set myself up for success for the new start. Here are my top 10 tips for getting organized in the New Year.

  1. Set Manageable Goals In order to stay organized, set manageable goals for yourself. Write down three things every morning that you can realistically accomplish. At the end of the day, you’ll feel more accomplished and encouraged to tackle all those little tasks.
  2. Get with the Flow When organizing your space, first declutter. A mess is necessary in order to get a good, organized flow of your area. Put most used items in easy to reach places or at eye level if it’s on a shelf. Things that aren’t used, frequently, put away in lower drawers, cabinets, shelves.
  3. Establish Daily, Weekly, and Monthly Routines -  As a busy mom and business owner, I know the importance of establishing a daily, weekly, and monthly routine. I need a clear, set routine to keep everything moving and in-order. In my office corner, I keep my daily, weekly, and monthly schedules separate. Visually, it can be overwhelming looking at my monthly calendar when I just need to know what to do just for that day, so I separate my schedules into different drawers using the Three-Drawer Organizer. That way I know exactly where and what I need for that exact moment.
  4. Track Your Progress -  A big part of staying organized is tracking your progress for the whole family, especially for the kids. Create new and helpful habits for your little ones. I found a fun way to keep track of our progress by adding stickers to a chore chart. My daughter, Lily, loves to check off her chores with stickers. It makes keeping us organized fun and simple!
  5. Choose One Area at a Time -  Organizing can be overwhelming at times. Instead of having a large project to complete by a deadline, break it down into smaller, more manageable bites. Choose one area at a time to organize. I usually tell myself: “Today I’m going to organize my closet today.” That’s a manageable chore, instead of cleaning every single closet in my house.
  6. Find a Home for Everything - In the past, whenever me or my husband needed a nail, I used to dig through several buckets before I was able to find one. Now, I’ve started keeping all my tools, nails, and screws, perfectly organized in the garage. The Stackable Caddy Organizer Multi-Pack Bundle makes the perfect toolbox (and the rolling wheels base makes it so easy to move around to whatever project I need it for!). By finding a home for everything, I am able to simplify my life and make it less stressful.
  7. Color Code I love color-coding. It’s so incredibly easy to get organized when everything is visually and aesthetically in order. My favorite way to do this is arranging it similar to a rainbow - white, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet, and black.
  8. Divide And Conquer -  Organizing is not for the faint of heart. We all need a little help to get and stay organized. That’s why I rely on my family to help me divide and conquer messy situations. Don’t be afraid to ask for a little help. When everyone pitches in, we all get the work done in time.
  9. Create New Storage Solutions If your current organization system isn’t working, it might be time to switch up your organization game. Don’t be afraid to be creative in making new storage solutions! I recently started using Tilt Bin® Interlocking Storage Organizer for my electronics. With the unique interlocking system, this organizer is perfect for keeping all my chargers, wires, and other electronic gear all in one place instead of all over the house.
  10. Set Reminders Set reminders on your calendar or phone to revisit the newly organized space to keep up the good habits. The secret to an organized home is to stay organized. By setting yourself periodic reminders, you maintain the function and order.
Now it’s time to celebrate your success in your newly organized space! The New Year is the perfect time to reinvent a new you. With these simple tips, you can achieve your organizational dreams. #DeflectoAtHome

Quick and Easy Rainbow Encouragement Cards

Create Rainbows of Color with these Quick and Easy Cards of Encouragement
created by Design Team Member, Beth Watson.

How to Create Rainbow Cards of Encouragement

Materials Needed:

  • Mixed Media Art Paper
  • Dual Brush Tip Art Markers
  • Blank Cards with Envelopes
  • Adhesives
  • Circle and Heart Templates
  • Variety of Colored Cardstock
Featured Storage:  Stackable Cube Organizers

Directions:

  • Create patterned paper by drawing lines, in rainbow order, on four sheets of mixed media paper. Create two horizontal and two vertical sheets. This paper was from a pad, so I removed the perforated strip along the side. (Use any combination of colors that you want to create a custom rainbow.)

  • The cards are made with one half of an 8 1/2″ by 11″ piece of cardstock (8 1/2″ by 5 1/2″) folded in half to create a 4 1/2″ by 5 1/2″ card.
  • Start by cutting four sections of the homemade rainbow paper into rectangles to fit the card fronts. I sketched and lettered messages onto hearts and circles with Brush Pens.
  • Attach to the card fronts with a tape runner. Mix and match the hand-lettered words of encouragement with printing. Use letter stickers if you don’t care for your hand lettering.

  • For the second set of four cards, trace a variety of hearts and circles with the templates onto the handmade rainbow paper. You could also use paper punches. Mix and match adding the circles to colored cardstock with adhesive and foam tape for added dimension.
  • Layer the embellished cardstock onto the blank card fronts.
  • Add words of encouragement with a permanent marker, hand lettering, and printing.

  • For the third set of four cards, trace a variety of hearts and circles with the templates onto the rainbow and colored cardstock paper. You could also draw your templates. Mix and match adding the hearts to the card fronts and colored cardstock foam tape for added dimension.
  • Layer the embellished cardstock onto the card front blanks with adhesive tape runner.
  • Add words of encouragement with hand lettering, and printing.

Beth loves using the Deflecto Stackable Cube Organizers to keep her embellishments
and work surface organized.

Beth says..."Being organized allows me to be more productive in my creative flow.  Having everything at arms reach and visible through the plastic drawers has been a game-changer.
I love how this storage unit looks on my work table in my studio."  (and we love it too!)

Thank A Nurse Card

Card Designed By Nadine Carlier

Nurses do a lot and put up with a lot and don't always get the Thanks they deserve.

So if you get a chance, don't forget to Thank a Nurse.

This is how Design Team Member Nadine Carlier uses hers...

"I do a lot of ink blending and have a lot of different ink blending tools.  Some of them are small and hard to keep organized. I started using the Deflecto Stackable Cube with 2 Drawers and also with 4 Drawers. Because I have so many sponge daubers, I took one of the bigger drawers from the Deflecto 2 Drawer Cube and exchanged it with 2 of the smaller drawers from the Deflecto 4 Drawer Cube to fit all the daubers in and so that all of my ink blenders are all in the same cube."

There are several different styles of Deflecto Stackable Cube Organizers that lets you
create custom storage.  Keeps your workspace clutter-free and supplies close at hand.

Scrapbooking a Day in the Park

When you have lofty scrapbooking goals like Design Team member Anita Scroggins.
Keeping your page supplies organized is important.  Anita is working on scrapbooking her trip
to Disney with her family from 2018.  She is up to day 6.  (pretty impressive)

This is what Anita says about working on her Disney album.

"When I am working on an album it drives me crazy to have to dig through my embellishments to find what I am looking for. Enter the amazing Deflecto Stackable Cube Organizer. By removing the drawers and turning it up on the end it becomes a great way to store all my stuff within reach. It keeps everything in place and I can flip through the my pieces to grab the perfect embellishment."

Coloring Fun for Everyone

Looking for an activity that everyone can enjoy? Something easy and fun that doesn't create a lot of mess? Design team member, Erin Reed, shows us a craft that she likes to do with her family.

Coloring on Acrylic with Permanent or Alcohol Based Markers.

Here's what you'll need:
  • Blank or Preprinted Acrylic Shapes
  • Colored Permanent Markers or Alcohol Based Markers
  • Container to hold Markers (we recommend the Interlocking Storage Organizer)
Directions:
  1. If using blank acrylic shapes, draw a picture or design on the acrylic using a black permanent marker.
  2. Color in the designs with the markers. The markers dry quickly to eliminate mess.
  3. Get the family involved to color along!

When not working on individual projects with her family, Erin stores her markers in the Stackable Cube Organizer. Can we talk about marker envy?

Organize your Craft Cabinet with Deflecto

Organize with Deflecto Storage Solutions

If you're lucky, a designated craft cabinet with closed doors can be awesome.
That means you've graduated from your kitchen table. One potential problem: with closed cabinet doors, even the neatest and the tidiest person might be tempted to stash and run when it's time to clean up in a hurry. Those well-meaning craft cabinets can easily be ignored and get out of control without the right organization.

(the Prismacolor pencils are in a medium stackable caddy container)

Organizing doesn't have to be tedious and overwhelming if you take it one space at a time.

Once you've cleared out the cabinet, you'll need to find the best storage that works for you. Deflecto has several great storage options to fit your needs.

Organization Tip...Labeling the bins is a great way to ensure supplies go back where they belong. They not only look good, but it also helps when looking for supplies.

The bins are easy to take with you when you need to work. They keep your workspace clutter-free and your supplies close at hand.
